FAQ's For Menopause

Menopause occurs due to a natural decline in production of reproductive hormones. It usually happens in the 40s and 50s and is diagnosed when a woman goes 12 months without her period. The lack of oestrogen and progesterone can cause symptoms like mood swings, vaginal dryness, hair thinning, hot flashes and weight gain.

The main symptoms of menopause are irregular periods, mood swings, vaginal dryness, hair thinning, hot flashes, sleep problems, loss of breast fullness, dry skin, reduced metabolism, chills, night sweat, and weight gain.

Menopause is said to have occurred when a woman does not get her period for 12 months. Leading up to this point (perimenopause), many women experience symptoms that can last up to 5 years after menopause.

Symptoms can be treated using various medications like hormone therapy (oestrogen), gabapentin, clonidine, and low doses of a form of antidepressant called SSRI.

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet rich with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, high-quality proteins, dairy products, healthy fats (omega-3 fatty acid), vitamin D, and calcium.

Menopause is a time period and subsequent condition which marks the end of a woman’s menstruation, and occurs due to a natural decline in production of reproductive hormones. It usually happens in the 40s and 50s and is diagnosed when one goes 12 months without a period. It is a completely natural process but causes many physically and emotionally taxing symptoms. The most common signs of menopause are:
Irregular periods
Weight gain
Reduced metabolism
Night sweats
Chills
Hot flashes (one of the most common menopause symptoms)
Vaginal dryness
Mood changes
Sleep problems
Loss of breast fullness
Thinning hair
Dry skin

These symptoms are called perimenopause and occur in the months leading up to menopause. Some women may experience menopause in their early 40s. This is a called early menopause, or premature menopause, and occurs due to primary ovarian insufficiency (when the ovaries fail to produce normal levels of reproductive hormones).

Menopause is a biological process, and hence it cannot be prevented. However, there are several ways to ease symptoms and make the transition as smooth as possible. Menopause treatment may include:
Hormone therapy—oestrogen is used to relieve hot flashes
Vaginal oestrogen—By ring, cream or tablet, oestrogen can be administered to help reduce vaginal dryness and improve urinary functions.
Antidepressants—In a low dose, SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) may decrease menopausal hot flashes.
Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise)—It is a seizure medication commonly used to prevent hot flashes and night sweats.
Clonidine (Catapres, Kapvay, others)—This is another form of medication used to treat hot flashes. It is available as a pill or a patch.

Apart from medication, there are several lifestyle changes and home remedies which can help with menopause relief.
• Avoid triggers for hot flashes like caffeine, spicy food, hot beverages, stress, alcohol or hot weather.
• Reduce vaginal discomfort with water-based lubricants like Astroglide and K-Y jelly, or silicone-based lubricants like Replens. Avoid lubricants containing glycerin.
• Get enough sleep.
• Practice relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, deep breathing, etc.
• Stop smoking
• Maintain a healthy, balanced diet.
• Strengthen the pelvic floor using Kegel exercise.
• Exercise regularly

HerbsDaily offers a wide selection of effective menopause supplements to help ease symptoms.
