FAQ's For Lactose Intolerance

Common symptoms of lactose intoreance include bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, gas and stomach cramps

Lactose intolerance can stem from a patient’s poor ability to produce lactase, an enzyme found in the small intestine used to break down and digest lactose. Often times, they can still get away with consuming dairy products even if their bodies produce low levels of lactase. The problem arises when levels are so low that dairy products go undigested in the colon, causing the symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Consume dairy products sparingly. If you do choose to eat dairy, take a lactase enzyme pill, powder or liquid to help with digestion.

Avoid any and all dairy products like milk, cheese, curd, yoghurt, ghee, butter, etc.

Dairy intolerance treatment involves adopting a specific diet to prevent exacerbated symptoms. This includes eating foods like Oranges
Calcium-fortified cereals and juices
Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale
Broccoli
Canned sardines and salmon
Almonds and brazil nuts
Dried beans
This helps patients maintain good nutrition.

Lactose Intolerance or lactose malabsorption is a condition which causes the body to be unable to properly digest lactose sugar, commonly found in milk and dairy products. It causes digestive discomfort in patients who consume dairy.

Common lactose intolerance symptoms include:
Diarrhoea
Nausea
Occasional vomiting
Stomach cramps
Bloating
Gas

Dairy intolerance can stem from a patient’s poor ability to produce lactase, an enzyme found in the small intestine used to break down and digest lactose. Often times, they can still get away with consuming dairy products even if their bodies produce low levels of lactase. The problem arises when levels are so low that dairy products go undigested in the colon, causing the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Some common risk factors include:
Increasing age (The condition appears in adulthood.)
Premature birth (Lactase-producing cells aren’t created till the third trimester.)
Certain cancer treatments (Radiation therapy can kill lactase-producing cells.)
Race (Some racial groups like Africans, Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics are at higher risk.)
Disease affecting the small intestine (Celiac disease and Crohn’s disease often cause lactose intolerance.)

Lactose intolerance treatment begins with avoiding dairy products, no matter the temptation. Foods like milk, cheese, curd, yoghurt, butter, etc should be sparingly consumed. Patients are encouraged to embrace milk alternatives like soy milk, almond milk, cashew milk, and oat milk. To lower the intake of lactose in one’s diet, one can consume only small servings of dairy in a day and add lactase enzyme powder or liquid to milk in order to help digest lactose.

Patients are also encouraged to maintain good nutrition by adopting a lactose intolerance diet, and incorporating foods like:
Oranges
Calcium-fortified cereals and juices
Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale
Broccoli
Canned sardines and salmon
Almonds and brazil nuts
Dried beans

HerbsDaily offers a wide range of supplements that can help patients having lactose intolerance maintain a healthy lifestyle.
