FAQ's For Macular Degeneration

Heredity, diet, environemental factors, smoking, and aging are significant factors in causing macular degeneration.

Some commonly prescribed medications include:
Anti-angiogenic drugs
Laser therapy
Photodynamic laser therapy
Vitamins
Low vision aids

In most cases, it takes about 10 years to go from initial diagnosis to complete loss of vision.

There are several studies to show that vitamins C and E, as well as minerals like copper and zinc are helpful in reducing the risk of vision loss.

Though it is not possible to completely halt the progression of macular degeneration, one can slow it down using medication and treatments recommended by a doctor.

Macular degeneration is an eye disease which gradually causes permanent vision loss. There are two types: juvenile or Stargardt macular degeneration and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The former happens to children and young adults, while the latter occurs in people aged over 60 years. Macular degeneration happens when some abnormal blood vessels leak blood or fluid in a specific part of retina known as macula.

Under age-related macular degeneration, there are two sub-types:

1. Wet Macular Degeneration: Here, blood vessels grow underneath the macula (center of the retina, or light-sensing nerve tissue in the back of the eye), causing blood and fluid to leak into the retina. Vision becomes distorted, and eventually the bleeding causes scars which lead to permanent vision loss.

2. Dry Macular Degeneration: Yellow deposits called drusen are formed in the macula. Though one or two do not cause any serious changes, an increase an size and number of drusen can distort the vision. Light-sensitive cells are destroyed and eventually the patient loses central vision.

Symptoms of macular degeneration vision include:
Worsened or blurred vision (Driving or reading fine print becomes difficult)
Dark, blurry spots in the center of one’s vision
Rarely, poor color perception

Macular degeneration treatment involves slowing the progress of the disease, as there is no known cure. Some commonly prescribed medications include:
Anti-angiogenic drugs
Laser therapy
Photodynamic laser therapy
Vitamins
Low vision aids
