The best treatment is to identify the specific allergen and avoid it at all costs. However, if you are experiencing an allergy-related skin rash, medications like calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream, corticosteroids and antihistamines, can be prescribed. There are several home remedies like cold compress or oatmeal baths that can ease symptoms as well.
It can take anywhere from a few hours to 10 days from being in contact with the allergen for symptoms to show. It may take 2-4 weeks for the rash to fully heal.
Allergy rashes often resemble hives. They cause small, red, itchy bumps which get inflamed on itching.
The top ten allergens are:
Nickel (jewellery, clasps, buttons)
Gold (jewellery)
Balsam of Peru (tree resin used in fragrances, skin lotion)
Thimerosal (mercury compound for local antiseptics, preservatives in vaccines)
Neomycin sulfate (topical antibiotic, ointments, cosmetics, deodorant, pet food, soap)
Fragrance mix
Formaldehyde (Preservative found in paper products, medication, paints, cosmetics)
Cobalt chloride (Metal used in medical products, hair dye, pigment, antiperspirant)
Bacitracin (topical antibiotic)
Quaternium 15 (self-tanners, shampoo, nail polish, sunscreen, paint, wax)
A skin allergy occurs when the body’s immune system thinks it is under attack, sending antibodies to defend against the allergen which caused the attack. This results in the itchy, red, inflamed skin rash most people having allergies are all too familiar with and is called allergy contact dermatitis.
