Tingling, or paresthesia, is a condition characterized by an unusual numb sensation in the hands, feet, arms, or legs. The tingling sensation often causes inability to feel texture or pressure.
Occasional instances of pins and needles should not be a cause of concern. However, if the pain is severe or long-lasting, contact a medical professional immediately.
Common causes of a tingly feeling include:
Prolonged pressure on a nerve (can cause arm tingling or feet tingling)
Vitamin or mineral deficiencies (like B12 deficiency)
Head, neck or back injury
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Raynaud’s phenomenon (causes tingling hands)
Transient ischemic attack
Most often, the cause of a tingling feeling is compressed nerves. If this is the case, wait it out and slowly move the affected area once sensation returns to improve blood circulation. However, if this feeling is prolonged, it may be due to other causes. Using medical assistance, it can be treated based on the specific cause.
The feeling should not last more than 5 minutes if the cause is a compressed nerve. If it lasts longer, the pain is severe, or it leads to complete loss of sensation, there may be a different underlying cause.
