FAQ's For Tingling

Tingling, or paresthesia, is a condition characterized by an unusual numb sensation in the hands, feet, arms, or legs. The tingling sensation often causes inability to feel texture or pressure.

Occasional instances of pins and needles should not be a cause of concern. However, if the pain is severe or long-lasting, contact a medical professional immediately.

Common causes of a tingly feeling include:
Multiple sclerosis
Stroke
Prolonged pressure on a nerve (can cause arm tingling or feet tingling)
Vitamin or mineral deficiencies (like B12 deficiency)
Head, neck or back injury
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Compressed nerve
Hypothyroidism
Raynaud’s phenomenon (causes tingling hands)
Seizure
Transient ischemic attack

Most often, the cause of a tingling feeling is compressed nerves. If this is the case, wait it out and slowly move the affected area once sensation returns to improve blood circulation. However, if this feeling is prolonged, it may be due to other causes. Using medical assistance, it can be treated based on the specific cause.

The feeling should not last more than 5 minutes if the cause is a compressed nerve. If it lasts longer, the pain is severe, or it leads to complete loss of sensation, there may be a different underlying cause.

Muscle weakness
Pain in the area or surrounding areas
Rash (usually occurs in a band on one side of the torso)
Seizures or convulsions
Sudden change in vision
Loss of vision
Eye pain

Tingling treatment depends on the cause of the feeling. Several medications can be used to ease numbness and tingling stemming form multiple sclerosis such as gabapentin, pregabalin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, amitriptyline, imipramine, and nortriptyline. Niacin or vitamin B complex can help reduce inflammation and redness. Besides MS, the following methods are used for other underlying causes:
Stroke—Surgery or endovascular procedures for haemorrhagic stroke, and medications to treat clots for transient ischemic stroke (if within 3 hours of first symptoms)
Transverse myelitis—Pain medications, intravenous immunoglobulin, antivirals, or plasma exchange therapy
Meningitis—Antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and corticosteroid medications
Tumors—Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other drug therapies
Diabetic neuropathy—Physical activity, healthy diet, religiously following diabetes treatment plans, examining the feet daily for changes, and getting regular foot exams
Carpal tunnel syndrome—Wrist braces, OTC pain medications, nerve-gliding exercises, or surgery. Avoid trigger activities
Pernicious anaemia—Vitamin B12 injections, pills, or nose gels and sprays.
Hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesemia—Infusions, supplements, dietary changes, keeping away from triggers, and treating the underlying causes
