FAQ's For Neck Pain

More often than not, neck pain is a result of muscle strain or tension due to poor posture, physical activity, prolonged desk work or poor sleeping position. However, when accompanied by certain other symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, a lump in the neck, etc there may be a more serious underlying cause which requires immediate medical attention.

Neck pain is a common condition experienced due to a variety of factors. The neck is made up of vertebrae which connect the skull to the torso. There are several bones, ligaments and muscles in the neck which support the head and allow for movement. Any injury or inflammation to these components can cause neck pain.

Some common neck pain causes include:
• Muscle tension or strain due to poor posture, overuse, prolonged desk work, poor sleep positions or jerk movements during sports and exercise
• Injury especially due to sports, car accidents, or falls
• Heart attack, which is also accompanied by symptoms like dizziness, chest tightness, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, and arm or jaw pain
• Meningitis, a serious condition which causes inflammation of thin tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord, often characterized by a stiff neck, fever, neck pain and headache
• Other rarer causes like fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, herniated cervical disc or spinal stenosis
