More often than not, neck pain is a result of muscle strain or tension due to poor posture, physical activity, prolonged desk work or poor sleeping position. However, when accompanied by certain other symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, a lump in the neck, etc there may be a more serious underlying cause which requires immediate medical attention.
The most common causes of neck pain are muscle tension, muscle strain, injury, or arthritis. However other more serious causes include meningitis, heart attack, fibromyalgia, or spinal stenosis.
Neck pain treatment can be carried out using the following methods:
Pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin IB, Advil) or naproxen (Aleve)
Exercises, stretching and physical therapy
The following neck pain symptoms are a cause for concern and should be checked by a doctor immediately:
Severe neck pain without any apparent cause
Lump in the neck
Nausea and vomiting
Trouble swallowing or breathing
Numbness and tingling
Pain that radiates down the arms or legs
Inability to move the arms or hands
Inability to touch the chin to the chest
Bladder or bowel dysfunction
Pinched nerves in the neck often give a tingly or pins-and-needles sensation, as well as weakness in the arms, shoulders and hands.
