Diaper rash causes inflammed and red skin and discomfort to the baby during diaper changes

It can cause great discomfort to the baby during diaper changes, or when the area is touched and washed.

When treated, diaper rash goes away within two to three days.

Diaper rash, also called irritant diaper dermatitis, is a common form of skin inflammation characterized by bright red skin on a baby’s bottom. It is caused by soiled or infrequently changed diapers which cause sensitive skin to chafe and become irritated.
Common symptoms of diaper rash include:
Red and inflamed skin on the thighs, buttocks, and genitals
Baby becomes more agitated and uncomfortable than usual during diaper changes
Baby cries when the diaper region is touched or washed

Candida diaper rash can occur in extreme cases when patches of red skin start to appear outside the diaper region. The child can also have yeast infection in the mouth (oral thrush).

Baby diaper rash can be caused by a number of factors including:
Irritation from stool and urine
Irritation from a new product
Sensitive skin
Chafing or rubbing
Introduction of new foods
Use of antibiotics
Bacterial or yeast infection
Introducing new foods to the baby’s diet

Diaper rash treatment involves fairly simple remedies and methods of sanitation such as the following:
• Keep the diaper area clean and dry by frequently changing diapers, especially after they become wet or soiled. After gently cleaning the affected area, apply a cream or ointment which will help keep out moisture such as petroleum jelly or zinc oxide. Do not try to rub off excess ointment as it can cause more discomfort. Instead try removing it with a cotton pad and mineral oil.
• Increase airflow in the diaper region by allowing the baby to go diaper-less at least three times a day for ten minutes at a time.
• Avoid diaper covers and plastic pants for some time.
• Use a larger size of diapers until the rash goes away.
• Apply ointment, paste, lotion or cream. A lot of OTC products are available to help diaper rash such as A + D, Balmex, Desitin, and Triple Paste. Lotrimin can be used for yeast diaper rash treatment. In general, use products that are meant for babies. Avoid any diaper rash cream containing baking soda, boric acid, camphor, phenol, benzocaine, diphenhydramine, or salicylates as they can be harmful in nature.
• Bathe the baby daily in warm water using mild, unscented soaps.

There are several natural diaper rash remedies that can be used to ease symptoms:
Calendula
Aloe vera
Clay shampoo (bentonite)
Witch hazel ointment
