FAQ's For Arthritis

Some tell-tale signs of arthritis include pain, swelling, and stiffness in one or more joints, morning stiffness, pain and stiffness that improves with physical activity, decreased range of motion, and occasionally fever, weight loss, fatigue and anaemia.

Arthritis is caused by several factors such as age, family history, sex, obesity and previous injury.

Though there is no known cure for arthritis, recent developments in medicine and technology have allowed multiple paths for treatment of pain, especially if started at an earlier stage.

Fried and processed foods, corn oil, alcohol, tobacco, salt, preservatives, dairy, sugar, and refined carbohydrates should be avoided by those having arthritis.

There are several joint inflammation remedies which can help ease the pain. These include:
Weight loss
Exercise
Hot and cold compresses
Assistive devices like raised toilets, canes, walkers, and shoe inserts
Acupuncture
Tai chi
Massage therapy
Yoga

Arthritis is caused by swelling or tenderness of the joints. It typically worsens with age and causes stiffness and pain. There are several types of arthritis. The most common types are:
Rheumatoid arthritis—The immune system to attack the lining of the joints, causing chronic joint inflammation
Osteoarthritis—This causes cartilage to breakdown, commonly affecting the hands, knees, hips and spine
Ankylosing spondylitis—This is an inflammatory disease which causes the small bones in the spine to fuse, resulting in pain and a hunched-over posture
Gout—Gout is a complex form of arthritis wherein a patient experiences sudden, intense pain in the joint most commonly at the base of the big toe due to sedimentation of urate crystals
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis—It causes persistence of pain, stiffness, and swollen joints in children under the age of 16 years
Psoriatic arthritis
Reactive arthritis
Septic arthritis
Thumb arthritis

Common symptoms of arthritis include:
Joint pain
Joint stiffness
Swelling and inflammation
Redness and tenderness
Decreased range of motion

Joint pain relief comes in several forms such as:
• Painkillers—OTC pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) may improve pain but won’t cure the swelling. Stronger pain relievers in the form of opiates like tramadol (Ultram, ConZip), oxycodone (OxyContin, Roxicodone, others) or hydrocodone (Hysingla, Zohydro ER) may be prescribed, however they act on the central nervous system and become habit-forming over time. Hence, they are not often recommended.
• NSAIDs—Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen (Motrin IB, Advil) reduce both pain and swelling.
• Creams and ointments containing capsaicin and menthol
• DMARDs—Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs can slow or stop the immune system from attacking the joints. Examples include methotrexate (Trexall, Rasuvo) and hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil).
• Biological response modifiers
• Corticosteroids
• Physical therapy
• Surgery
